Characteristics of Growth and Development, and the Habitat Environment of Cymbidium goeringii in Moodung Mountain

Abstract
The study was carried out in order to obtain basic informations on the growth and development of Cymbidium goeringii distributed in the foot of Mt. Moodung near Kwangju which was located in the western part of Korea, through investigation on vegetation structure, seasonal changes of air temperature, light intensity, growth and development. Vegetation structure were found to consist of four layers: which were tree, subtree, bush and herb layer. The main layer for shading was identified as a pine tree layer of the vegetation structure. The vegetative growing period occurs twice a year, early spring to early summer and late summer to late fall for a total of 5 to 6 months. Flower buds started to differentiate when the temperature range reached about 25¡É during the day time and 15¡É at night. The first layer of the habitat soil was composed of several kinds of humus which contributed to supply water and nutrients for the growth of Cymbidium goeringii. Symbiotic fungus around Cymbidium stumps moved to the surface of its root and infilterated the inside cells of root through stomatas and proliferated and resulted in digestion.
